Essex is NOT Required YET and is This plan a Green One?

I am all for conservation, reducing, reusing, recycling but I believe this plan could add negatively to our greenhouse gas emissions and pocket books well before the Town of Essex is mandated to even do so. Some municipalities are being asked to join prematurely. I believe each municipality SHOULD be allowed to make its own independent decision based on what is best for their residents.

The Essex Mayor and Deputy Mayor have an expensive decision to make. More trucks going down rural roads to pick up bins of compost that really should be in back yard composters just does not make sense. The green bin program has been working well in Ward 1, why can we not just expand that to urban areas and encourage back yard composting in rural areas. We do not need to be Windsor’s Solution for their mandate.

Municipal Participation Requirements as per the Organics Provincial Policy Statement (OPPS)

Municipalities in Essex-Windsor are required to achieve specific reduction and
recovery target rates by 2025 as follows:

City of Windsor – Provide curbside collection of food and organic waste to
single family dwellings in an urban settlement area and to achieve a target
rate of reduction of 70%;

Amherstburg, LaSalle, Leamington and Tecumseh – Provide collection
(through a public drop-off depot or community composting area or through
curbside collection) of food and organic waste to single family dwellings in an
urban settlement area and to achieve a target rate of reduction of 50%;

Essex, Kingsville and Lakeshore – Not required to achieve specific rates of
reduction for food and organic waste based on their population and
population densities.
