A Win for Public Consultation on Publicly Owned Heritage Properties- Recorded Vote

  • News

February 1st at the Regular Meeting of Council the Following Notice of Motion was brought forward for discussion:

Declaring Cultural or Historical Property Surplus
Moved by Sherry Bondy
Seconded by Deputy Mayor Meloche

That in advance of Council designating any public property
surplus which has Cultural or Historic value, that the public is
first consulted by means of social media, newspaper, town
website, open houses, public meetings etc. and when
properties are deemed to have heritage value, the Heritage
Committee is also given notice and time to provide a
recommendation to Council.

The motion has a healthy debate by council and at the end of the discussion the term “cultural” was removed but it could not easily be defined. Administration is bringing the discussion back to council.

The Vote was recorded with all councillors in support except Councillor Vander Doelen and Mayor Snively.

Thanks Council for taking a pause and listening to the community and the Heritage Committee appointed by council to be our Heritage experts. Well done. This was a good step forward.
