No one should ever have to crawl on the floor to the bathroom…

I am so excited to discuss the following topics on Monday, some more than others. Affordable housing is something we can not talk enough about! I have been inquiring about the possibility of after-hours bylaw enforcement for some time and it has finally made it to the agenda. Recently, many street parking sign questions have come my way, in the vicinity of St. Anthony School, Weston Apartments, and even in my subdivision. Under Community Services, the topic of accessible bathrooms pulls at my heart strings. This is a Town owned building that is being leased by a fantastic group. Members of this group have different abilities and in order for a member to use the bathroom, he must crawl on the floor because the bathroom is NOT accessible. NO ONE should have to crawl to the bathroom, especially in a town owned facility. AODA FAIL. This needs to be addressed ASAP. I have been working with the group and Town administration to get quotes and to make the bathrooms accessible. It will cost approximately 15k. We recently received a grant for a Basketball Net Winch for MAE as users complained that it is difficult to manually raise and lower the units in the amount of $11,500. If we can apply for a grant for that, we should be able to make an accessible bathroom a priority.

I entered this Notice of Motion to discuss this topic at council but was asked to remove it so we could discuss it at the Committee of the Whole – “That the carry forward funds for painting interior ECC at $2825, that carry forward new A/C CCC for $2753, that carry forward of install a new sidewalk to play set at Hunter park $5781, that carry forward paint interior McGregor Community Centre , $8315 be used to pool together to install an accessible bathroom at the Essex Field House.”

To facilitate the discussion, the Presiding Officer shall remind the Committee of
the Whole that discussion on each item shall not exceed 15 minutes so as to
enable all discussion items to be considered.
