Tiny Homes In Essex: Update- There is No Update

A Repost from May 10th- 2021

I hope we can see some tiny homes in our future…

May 10, 2021, at the Special Council Meeting: Roundtable, Development Services, council discussed tiny homes. We are currently reviewing the zoning around tiny homes. We are looking to remove the minimum dwelling size from our zoning which would mean we would revert to the Ontario Building Code minimum of 240 square feet.

As far as a tiny home communities however, there would be land lease options for developers. Developers also could, in theory, build a subdivision of tiny homes. We can also look at 3 season camp grounds and converting them to all season tiny homes. The first step in moving forward is removing the minimum dwelling size to match the Ontario Building Code. We are also entering the review of the Official Plan and looking at ways to create more affordable housing options in our municipality.

Councillor Bowman is in favour of tiny home communities and Councillor Vander Doelen supports tiny homes however he states that the possible social problems down the road created by tiny homes outweigh the problems of not having housing. Social problems due to lack of housing means we should just do it. Councillor Joe Garon mentions the high demand market and the struggles for youth and seniors to find housing so he is in favour of tiny home communities. It was a great discussion and good to see we are moving forward soon on making tiny homes in the municipality a reality.
