Statement of Remuneration and Expenses – Members of Council
Section 284 of the Municipal Act states:
284. (1) The treasurer of a municipality shall in each year on or before March 31 provide to the council of the municipality an itemized statement on remuneration and expenses paid in the previous year to,
(a) each member of council in respect of his or her services as a member of the council or any other body, including a local board, to which the member has been appointed by council or on which the member holds office by virtue of being a member of council.
As you can see below this full time job pays like a part time job for some of us! This equates to many councillors in small municipalities being retired individuals because well frankly it is a job others can not afford to do. This is unfortunate as there are many good engaged candidates out there but they are often working full time and managing family life. I am personally so fortunate to have paid off my mortgage several years ago and I now own two rental properties so I do not rely exclusively on income from being on council. This smart financial move early on in my life has allowed me to enter politics at a younger age than most. I still do work part time with Essex County Library which is really a dream job and the schedule does allow me to devote a lot of time and energy to council initiatives. The time we spend in council chamber is really a fraction of the amount of time some of us spend working for the community. Majority of people that sit on municipal council are not doing it for the money and the chart below demonstrates that! The full report can be found on the link below.
